Is it in my mind ?

Nearly three out of four ulcerative colitis (UC) sufferers (73 percent) responding to a new nationwide survey say not feeling well has become a normal part of life. Furthermore, they describe UC as disruptive when it comes to their relationship with a spouse (64 percent), their sexual relations (75 percent) and their emotional state (82 percent).
How do you cope with colitis ? Are you struggling with the emotional effects ? Even if a problem shared isn't a problem halved it may help to discuss it with people in the same situation.

It is not all in your mind. UC can manifest itself in other ways and affect other parts of the body not just the bowel. Mouth ulcers are pretty common and whilst nasty are not usually cause for concern. Treat topically with bonjela or igluu gel. Fatigue can be a real problem and you need to look after yourself, eat well, rest when you can and try to get a good nights sleep. Your joint pain could be a form of inflammatory arthritis which is caused by UC. I have this and see a rheumatologist on a regular basis, the treatments for UC and the arthritis are often exactly the same, as both conditions are auto immune diseases they are usually treated with some type of immunosppressant. I would definitely mention all the above to your consultant when you see him and also request a referral to a rheumatologist. Write down all your concerns, questions etc so you dont forget anything at your appointment.

Hope you start to feel better soon, do please let us know how you get on

Thanks,I've read about them on websites but not actually spoke to someone about them was hoping it was an age thing lol.So was unsure.
I'm still trying to figure out how to cope it's all so random,I have a friend's wedding to go to all day and at night next month the thought is stressful trying to think how I'm going to be how do you plan for a day out, travel, food, mood swings which I've developed I don't want to be a pain on someone's big day, just the weight loss and looking pale is noticeable

Just posting to agree with Rogalin. I could have cut my head off with the pain of mouth ulcers. iglu definately.

Planning for a day out. If you are well enough you go, if you arent you don't. A good friend will understand. Anyone who doesnt, you dont need to worry about. And if you take the pressure off yourself to absolutely MUST be there, you will reduce the stress which can affect colitis.

How to cope - have a look at the Crohns and Colitis association website - loads of information there. Post and ask as many questions as you need here. It has got a bit quieter than in my days, think a lot are using the facebook page, but there's always someone to talk to.
But most importantly work with your consultant, As Rogalin says, a list to take in, both of symptoms and questions. I just used to hand them over for him to read. Find out if your service has an IBD nurse and get the contact details.

Be kind to yourself. If you are fatigued, rest. Dont put undue pressure on yourself. You have a chronic condition that you cant imagine away. It is not in your mind, it is physical.
