Hello, I have recently given birth 9 weeks ago to a lovely little boy. During my pregnancy I was diagnosed with UC. I started to take Asacol suppositories 500mg daily. Since the birth my symptoms have become progressively worse. I am having bloody diarrhoea 10+ times a day and I am really struggling to manage looking after my boy between constant trips to the bathroom. I feel constantly weak because of losing so much blood and because I am breastfeeding. I have tried Prednisone steroid suppositories but they seemed to make my symptoms worse, and I have just been prescribed oral Asacol which haven't kicked in yet.
I am really struggling mentally and I haven't left the house is so long because I know I will have an accident. I am usually a really active person so this has really knocked me. I guess what I am looking for is a little reassurance that this will get better? I am supposed to be enjoying the first few months of my little boys life but I just feel so miserable and guilty.

Hi there, Colitis can be a particularly debilitating disease and you need all the help you can get from your GP and if you have access to one a Colorectal specialist nurse. It's all the running to the toilet that makes you feel so tired, ask if it is ok to take Loperamide, they really can help to calm things down a bit, before I had my colon removed I was taking up to 17 a day, but they allowed me to carry on as nearly normal as possible. I too found the steroid suppositories to not be of much use, for a start they wouldn't stay there, I found the tablets gave me more relief, but I understand that while you are breast feeding it can be difficult to take certain medicines. Just keep bothering your GP until you find something that does help, and fgood luck, if you need any questions answering post in the Coping With Colitis section and I'm sure someone will be able to help. Sorry only just seen your post.

Hopefully by now you'll have followed Phil's advice and are recovering.
Chronic fatigue is a side effect of UC. Let alone the tiredness of being a new mum.

Hope things are improving, but if you havn't seen anyone yet, push for an appointment was a gastroenterologist. Keep a diary of your symptoms and toilet visits.
