Ulcerative Colitis Medications - Azathioprine
Azathioprine
Azathioprine - an immunomodulator - is the drug of choice to manage
Colitis when mesalazine is not enough on it's own. It needs to be
well managed - as any change of dose is likely to take up to 8 weeks
to take effect. For most people azathioprine has no noticeable side
effects - but for a few the side effects are quite severe - and
the drug has to be discontinued. Whilst on azathioprine it is important
to have regular blood tests - especially towards the start of treatment.
